Diagnosis and treatment of chronic poisoning

Recently, we observe more and more increasing public interest in chronic poisoning with different toxic materials such as heavy metals, pesticides, chemical materials used in industry and at home. Even small doses of such materials may lead to different adverse changes caused by long-term exposure. Chronic poisoning is difficult to diagnose due to non-specific chronic symptomatology. Chronic poisoning, in contrast to acute, is caused by continuous exposure of the body to low doses of poison substances. Symptoms of chronic poisoning does not occur immediately, they are not so expressed as in cases of acute poisoning, however the chronic course of the disease does not mean that the health problem is mild or of a temporary character. Not less number of problems may be caused by hyperdiagnosis when the malfunctions of totally different origin are treated as chronic poisoning, which delays establishing of precise diagnosis, and in case of unskilled assignment of treatment the side effects of medicines prescribed for detoxification are likely to occur.

VTC professionals, clinical toxicologists with many years of experience in the field of clinical toxicology may assist in diagnosing with and treatment of chronic poisoning with different poisonous materials:

1. analysis and interpretation of clinical and laboratory data is made;

2. in case of the clear diagnosis the antidote treatment is administered in order to quicken elimination of the poison from the body and reduce its toxicity as well as symptomatic treatment is prescribed in order to improve the function of the most damaged organs;

3.
the patient is monitored and consulted as long as it is required to eliminate the causes which induced poisoning and the symptoms of poisoning.
